The History

The history of liberation of the modern South Sudan can’t be written without mentioning the tremendous contribution of the women of South Sudan. These women fought in the battle fields, provided necessary logistical support to other liberators, took care of the wounded, took care of children , provided decent burial for the dead, and above all kept the flame of liberation burning through all kinds of morale boosting.

Background

Among these brave women of South Sudan was the late Achol Philip Nhial—a beautiful, educated, intelligent, industrious, philanthropic and open-minded woman. Acholdit was the wife of Cdr. Salva Kiir Mayardit (the current President of the Republic of South Sudan), and she was the mother to Anok Salva Kiir and Thiik Salva Kiir. She passed after a long illness in Nairobi on 28th February 1993, where she was undergoing treatment. The late Achol Philip Nhial was an educationist who aspired other women to invest in education of their children. As a wife of the second most powerful SPLA/M’s commander, she used her influence to advocate for the care of the widows and orphans of the war of liberation.

Achol Philip Foundation

Achol Philip Foundation (APF) is a Family Foundation that was formed purposely to honor her deeds and to extend her presence among us as a tribute to the brave women of South Sudan who resiliently toiled through the tough legacies of liberation.
