BACKGROUND

Our story

South Sudan continues to face significant challenges in access to quality education, particularly in rural areas. Low enrollment, poor infrastructure, lack of trained teachers, and gender disparities are key barriers. In Pageri/ Loa, where Mama Achol was buried, there are limited formal education institutions, especially for early childhood and primary learners.

To address this, The Achol Philip foundation proposes the establishment of the Mama Achol Philip Memorial School, a community-based, inclusive learning institution focused on quality education, gender equality, and cultural preservation.

Objectives

  • To establish a modern primary and high school with inclusive access for both boys and girls.
  • To promote literacy, numeracy, and life skills education from early childhood to upper primary.
  • To create a safe learning environment, particularly for girls.
  • To honor and preserve the legacy of Mama Achol through a socially impactful institution.

Project Components

  • Infrastructure Development: Classrooms, administration block, latrines, water point, school hall, science and computer labs, and teachers’ housing.
  • Teacher Recruitment & Training: Prioritizing local, trained, and gender-balanced staff.
  • Curriculum Implementation: Based on the South Sudan national curriculum, with added life-skills and cultural modules.
  • Community Engagement: Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), community ownership, and local employment during construction.
  • Child Protection & Gender Inclusion: Girls’ club, safe spaces, menstrual hygiene support.

Expected Outcomes

  • Increased enrollment and retention in primary education in Pageri/ Loa.
  • Improved literacy and numeracy levels among children.
  • Enhanced community involvement in education.
  • A living memorial to Mama Achol that promotes legacy through service.
